What A tag is a label (which contains key and value) assigned to an AWS resource.
When AWS makes it easy to modify tags to meet your changing business requirements. Remember to include future plans for billing reports, automation and access control in your tagging Strategy.

- To Organize resources
- To track costs on a detailed level
- To separate the billing based on the Projects in an account
- To separate the billing based on the accounts if you have many under AWS Organizations
Types
AWS-Generated Tags – Tags that AWS defines and applies to supported AWS resources for cost allocation purposes. To use an AWS-generated tag a master account owner must activate it in the Billing and Cost Management console.
The AWS-generated tags are available only in the AWS Billing and Cost Management console and reports, and doesn’t appear anywhere else in the AWS console, including the AWS Tag Editor. The createdBy tag does not count towards your tags per resource limit.
User-Defined Tags – Tags that user defines, create and apply to resources. After you have created and applied them, you can activate them on the “Billing and Cost Management Console” for cost allocation tracking.
Tagging Best Practices
- Always name the tag with reasonable key and value for what you are trying to track
